If your home is new construction, contact a Public Works representative at 205-444-7543. They will instruct Waste Services of Alabama to deliver a trash and recycle bin to your home. They will also inform you of the days of collection and answer any questions you may have. If you have moved into an existing home, service has already been established at your address. You only need to call if you do not know the days of service or if the bins are damaged or missing.

Items such as paint, oil, old gas, many types of batteries, pesticides, etc. The dates of this event will be posted on the website as soon as it is finalized each year - usually in March.
Note: If you will bring paint to a solid and the can is completely dry, it can be placed with your regular trash. It must be completely dry with the lid off. You can speed up this process by adding cat litter, sand or sawdust.

The history of the hoop skirt.
As early as the 15th century in Spain, women wore “farthingales” under skirts to show their high social standing. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries in France and England, women wore “panniers” that created the illusion of wider hips and allowed them to display elaborate fabrics and embroideries. The classic Victorian Era hoop skirt is an extension of these. Women’s clothing in high society before the hoop skirt was very impractical; their voluminous dresses were made from several layers of thick, heavy fabric. Suffragettes and other women’s rights advocates fought for a way that women could increase their mobility and freedom while still being on-trend. The hoop skirt allowed women to not be weighed down by heavy fabric. They were mass-produced, which allowed for affordability, and soon hoop skirts were seen across several economic classes including the working class. In the antebellum south this became an equality effort, and newly-freed women began to wear hoop skirts as a way to show their recently gained freedom. The hoop skirt became a symbol of liberation for both black and white women in America across several classes.
Being a Hoover Belle creates opportunities to meet new friends, develop relationships, become involved in community activities, and refine communication skills. It’s just fun!
Belles are selected based on an interview with the Belle Board, resumes, letters from references, and academics. Belles are selected during their sophomore year to serve a two-year term during their junior and senior years of high school.
During their 2-year term, Belles are expected to volunteer for a minimum of 40 service hours. There are a number of activities each year from which to choose. Belles can manage their own schedule and time commitment for each year.
The Belle uniform is either the Belle gown or official Belle shirts and white skort or white pants. The activity or request by the organization determines what is worn.
An application fee of $25 is due with the application. The Hoover Belle fee of $325 is due at Belle orientation. The cost of the Belle gown varies. It can be made or purchased from Belles who choose to sell their dress after their term. Additional Belle merchandise is optional.

Only the offenses listed on the Schedule of Fines may be paid without a formal court appearance. By paying your fine and court costs, you are pleading guilty to the offense and waiving your right to a trial on that offense. If you decide to pay your citation by mail, we must receive your payment in full on or before your court date. We will not honor your postmark date. It is your responsibility to make sure we have received the full payment before your court date. When sending payment through the mail, you must submit a certified check or money order made payable to: Hoover Municipal Court. No Personal or Business Checks will be accepted.
For offenses that are not listed on the Schedule of Fines the municipal judge determines the amount of the fine for each individual case. Depending upon the charge, the judge can place up to $500 fine plus court costs that will vary based on the charge. There are some fines (i.e. DUI, Theft of Property) that can be much higher than this.

Tree trimmings, branches, shrub clippings, etc., must be no longer than six (6) feet. Place items directly on the curb. Do not place near fire hydrants, utility wires or utility boxes, mail boxes, vehicles or any place a boom truck would have difficulty maneuvering. Do not mix other household items in with the brush pile. If the homeowner hires a professional landscaper or tree service, it is the responsibility of the homeowner to have the company employed haul off all debris generated.

The City of Hoover does not maintain street lights on residential streets. To report problems with street lights on residential streets, please obtain the light pole number and then contact your Homeowners Association and/or Alabama Power Company at 1-800-245-2244. The City of Hoover maintains street lights on select major roadways including: I-65, I-459, Hwy 31, Hwy 150, Lorna Road and Municipal Drive. To report problems with street lights on these roadways, please contact Engineering at 205-444-7896 or through My Hoover Connect.

Yes, daily meals are provided through a grant program funded by Jefferson County. To be eligible for the meal program you must be at least 60 years of age and a resident of Jefferson County. Donations for meals are accepted. There are a limited number of meals available each day. A form must be filled out in order to participate in the program.

There is a common misconception that topping a tree will "revive" it. This is simply not true and no one should be convinced to the contrary by anyone still trying to sell the so called "service" of topping. Without question, topping any species of tree (especially large, mature shade trees) is a harmful practice that leads to structural defects and functional stress. Structural defects can result in limb and branch failures that, on their own, can injure people and damage property. Severe enough limb and branch failures can lead to decay in trees which worsens the tree's overall condition over time. Functional stress can leave trees more susceptible to outside pathogens which can and often does lead to decline and/or mortality. There are no known benefits to "topping" trees but there are numerous, negative and often dangerous side-effects. Here's what the ISA has to say:

Topping is a destructive practice with any species of tree. Crapemyrtle can tolerate annual topping but there are zero benefits associated with the practice. Size reduction can be achieved but to the detriment of flower production, winter form and other aesthetics. In addition, plants are left to cope with substantial injury and decay recovery. Crapemyrtle is a diverse species, with varieties and cultivars that grow naturally into numerous sizes, shapes and colors. If your planting area dictates a small crapemyrtle, you can plant a crapemyrtle that stays small. If you have a large space to fill then there's a large crapemyrtle out there that fits the bill. Crapemyrtles properly planted in full sun, maintained as they should be and allowed to grow to their natural size tend to be some of the most beautiful ornamental trees in the landscape. They are a "total package" tree, possessing an assortment of aesthetic and durability qualities. It's unfortunate that many people still miss out on all the wonderful characteristics this species has to offer when it's allowed to just be itself!

The city owns, operates and maintains the sanitary sewer system in the residential and business areas of Inverness, Riverchase and Southlake. To report a sewer problem to the city, please contact Burt Hankins, Clearwater Solutions at 205-657-0325. If he is not immediately available or for after normal business hours, you may contact the Hoover Emergency Dispatch Office at 205-822-5300 so that on-call personnel may be notified. Many homeowners / business owners are not aware that they are responsible for the sanitary sewer service line from their home or business to the main sewer. Any cleaning or repairs that need to be done to the service line are their responsibility. The city will provide assistance to you and/or your plumber to verify that the main sewer line is not obstructed. Should it be determined that main sewer line is obstructed, the city will take the necessary actions to alleviate the problem.
