City of Hoover Events
Be Kind

The City of Hoover will join with Hoover City Schools and the Hoover Schools Foundation to celebrate "Be Kind Week" from February 22nd - 26th, 2021. The culmination of the week will be on Wednesday, February 24th, which has been designated Pink Shirt Day. Students, school staff and community members are being asked to don a pink shirt on this day to show solidarity for the cause.

The original Pink Shirt Day event was organized by David Shepherd and Travis Price or Berwick, Nova Scotia. In 2007, the men bought and distributed fifty pink shirts throughout their community after a male ninth-grade student, Chuck McNeil, was bullied for wearing a pink shirt during the first day of school. Today, Pink Shirt Day is a global movement that brings awareness to bullying and encourages kindness.

In 2018, Hoover City Schools established their own "Be Kind Week" in conjunction with Pink Shirt Day in an effort to cultivate a culture of caring and kindness throughout the district. The goal was and continues to be to create a city-wide initiative so that together, Hoover can stand against bullying in its community, in the workplace, and in schools.

Besides Pink Shirt Day, the week will also include several other events. The City of Hoover has "turned the town pink" by lighting up City Hall with pink lights at night and placing banners that read "Celebrate Kindness" at major intersections. Hoover Mayor Frank Brocato will issue a proclamation in support of "Be Kind Week" and local businesses are distributing affirmation cards to customers. Those cards were created by Hoover students.

Also this year, collaborators are holding a book drive in conjunction with "Be Kind" week.  The focus is on collecting books geared towards elementary school children. Books may be dropped of at any Hoover City School, the Hoover Board of Education or any one of the following locations:

An Introduction to Birdwatching
with Greg Harber

Join us on Zoom to learn about the different types of birds in our area, how to attract them to your yard; and what gear; books/field guides, and other resources you’ll need for watching.

Greg Harber of the Alabama Audubon will discuss winter birds that we normally see in our area and how to identify and attract them. For these two consecutive Tuesday evenings, we will learn more about what attracts these birds and how to keep them visiting our yards. These programs are co-sponsored by Alabama Audubon, whose mission has been to promote conservation and a greater knowledge of birds, their habitats, and the natural world since 1946. Greg Harber has been a member of Alabama Audubon since he first moved to Birmingham in 1986. During that time, he has served in various capacities, including as a chapter officer and as a key member on several committees (Bird Counts and Education, among others). An avid cyclist and master birder, he currently serves on the Alabama Audubon Board of Directors and as chair of the Field Trips committee. Live From My Living Room seeks to connect musicians with music lovers in a digital space. This week we're joined by Paul Nixon, singer and guitarist for Dust Bunnies, from his home in Chicago.

This show will stream on our Facebook and YouTube pages. Direct event links for each platform coming soon.
"Dust Bunnies, a four-piece indie outfit out of Chicago, play a unique mutt-like breed of folk-pop that effortlessly blends derivative psychedelia and strummy bar music with the kind of stuff that it is so far removed from rock music that it reminds me exactly why I hate the blanket term “indie” in the first place." - KZSU Stanford University

This will be a solo set by Dust Bunnies member Paul Nixon from his home in Chicago.
